Large Grain Alligator vs Classic Alligator Leather

Alligator is not one look. The same leather can be cut and finished so that it reads as fine and formal, or as bold and graphic. The difference is mostly a matter of scale: how large the individual scales are on the finished strap.

This article compares the classic alligator pattern with large grain alligator, and explains which watches suit each.

What "grain" means on an alligator strap

The pattern of an alligator strap is made of scales, the small tiles separated by fine lines. On a classic strap, the scales are small and regular, and several rows fit across the width of the strap. On a large grain strap, the scales are much bigger: fewer of them fit across the strap, and each one is clearly visible from a distance.

Nothing else about the strap changes. Both are genuine alligator, both are lined, hand stitched and edge finished in the same way. What changes is how the pattern reads on the wrist.

The two side by side

Classic alligator Large grain alligator
Scales Small, regular, several rows across the strap Large, few across the strap
Reads as Fine, formal, detailed Bold, graphic, confident
Finish in my workshop Matte or shiny Not a high-gloss finish
Draws attention to The watch The strap and the watch together

If you are deciding between the two classic finishes, matte vs shiny alligator covers that choice.

Which watches suit large grain

A large pattern needs a watch that can hold its own next to it. Large grain works best with:

  • Strong, geometric cases. Square and rectangular watches with clear lines, such as the Cartier Santos and the Cartier Tank, sit well against a graphic pattern.
  • Wider straps. The wider the strap, the more room the scales have. On a very narrow strap, a large scale can look cut off.
  • Simple dials. If the dial is quiet, the strap can say more.

Classic alligator is the safer choice for small dress watches, busy dials, and anyone who wants the strap to stay in the background.

Where I use large grain

I make large grain alligator straps for two watches:

Both are lined with Zermatt leather from Tanneries Haas and saddle stitched by hand. Both are offered in the same eleven colours: black, matte black, bordeaux, red, aqua blue, jean blue, violet, imperial purple, sable, metallic bronze and Himalaya. You choose the colour, the lining and the thread in the configurator.

Every large grain strap is different

Because the scales are large, where the strap is cut from the hide matters more than on a classic strap. No two large grain straps have the same pattern. If you want a particular look, for example a more regular or a more irregular pattern, tell me when you order.

How to choose

Choose classic alligator if you want a strap that is formal, fine and quiet. Choose large grain if you want the strap to be part of the statement, and your watch has the lines to carry it. If you are unsure, send me a photo of your watch, and I will tell you which I would put on it.
