What Is Zermatt Lining and Why Does the Lining Matter?

When people choose a strap, they choose the outside: the leather, the colour, the finish. That is the part everyone else sees. The part you feel, every hour the watch is on your wrist, is the inside.

The lining is half of the strap. It decides how the strap feels against your skin, how it copes with a warm day, and how it holds its shape over the years. This article explains what the lining does, what Zermatt leather is, and how to choose between Zermatt and goat leather for your own strap.

What the lining does

A watch strap is made of two layers. The top leather gives the strap its look. The lining, stitched to it, does three quieter jobs.

  • Skin contact. The lining is the only part of the strap that touches you. Its surface decides whether the strap feels smooth, soft or slightly grippy.
  • Moisture. The inside of a strap meets warmth and perspiration. A lining has to cope with that day after day, where the top leather rarely gets wet at all.
  • Structure. The lining supports the top leather. Together with the skiving and any padding, it gives the strap its body and helps it keep its shape around the wrist.

A beautiful top leather on a poor lining feels wrong within a week. This is why I give the inside of a strap the same attention as the outside.

What Zermatt is

Zermatt is a calf leather from Tanneries Haas, a tannery in France whose leathers are used widely in fine leather goods. Among strap makers, Zermatt is one of the best-known lining leathers, and it is the standard lining for the straps I make.

I use it for two simple reasons:

  • It is soft and comfortable against the skin.
  • It is made as a lining leather, to sit against the skin and cope with the warmth and moisture of daily wear.

A note on claims: no leather is waterproof, and no lining suits every skin. If you know your skin reacts to certain leathers or tanning methods, tell me before you order and we will choose the lining together.

Zermatt or goat leather

Zermatt is the default, but it is not the only option. The configurator also offers goat leather linings in more than twenty colours, from black, chocolate and off-white to royal blue, dark green and red.

A coloured lining is seen only when the watch is off your wrist, or at the edge of the strap when you move. It is a private detail, which is exactly why many collectors enjoy it: a black alligator strap with a red lining, or a navy strap lined in the same blue.

How the lining is joined to the strap

The lining is not simply added at the end. It is cut to the strap, thinned by hand where the strap folds, joined to the top leather, and then held by the saddle stitching that runs around the strap. The edges of both layers are finished together, so that the top, the lining and the edge read as one piece.

The full process is described in how a handmade leather watch strap is made.

Caring for the lining

The lining does the hardest work, so a little care goes a long way.

  • Take the watch off before washing your hands, showering or swimming.
  • If the strap becomes damp, let it dry naturally, away from radiators and direct sun.
  • Give the strap a rest. A strap worn every day lasts longer if it can dry out overnight, and longer still if it alternates with a second strap.
  • Wipe the lining occasionally with a soft, dry cloth. Please do not use household cleaners.

Choosing your lining

If you want the classic choice, choose Zermatt and think no more about it. If you would like the inside of your strap to carry a colour of its own, look at the goat leather linings in the configurator on any product page. And if you are unsure which suits your skin or your watch, write to me. The lining is confirmed with you, like every other detail, before the leather is cut.
